Tan Chin Shu is a Geotechnical Engineer with over 40 years’ experience in foundation and geotechnical engineering industry and founding Director of Shinei Geotechnique, the company he currently leads.


Tan Chin Shu is a Professional Engineer, and Member of the Board of Engineers, Malaysia.

Tan Chin Shu obtained his BSc in Civil Engineering at UMIST University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and MSc in Foundation Engineering at University of Birmingham. In 1989, Chin Shu founded Shinei Geotechnique Sdn Bhd as part of the Shinei group of companies.

Tan Chin Shu started his career as a consultant at Jurutera Consult SEA where he was mentored by the late Professor Chin Fung Kee. He then joined Kemas Consult. Tan Chin Shu then became a contractor and was engineering manager at L&M Prestressing before becoming the Director of L&M Bauer (M). Tan Chin Shu was also a Director at Pintaras Jaya. Tan Chin Shu founded Material Testing Lab Soil Investigations company that was acquired by Geo Motion.

As a pioneering engineer, while with L&M Bauer in the 1980s, Tan Chin Shu lead the introduction of new techniques to the Malaysian geotechnical construction sector such as introduction of the hydraulic drilling rigs and new techniques like diaphragm walls and secant pile walls. Chin Shu was also involved in the innovation of new piling methods such as post grouting of bored piles in pile shaft and pile base for bored piling works.

From small diameter micropiles to large caisson piles, from underpinning to slope stabilisation works, Chin Shu has been involved in all manners of geotechnical projects.

At Shinei, Chin Shu contructed the largest circular cofferdam in Malaysia, at 43 m diameter 21 m deep, a Severage Water Treatment Plant in Papan. Tan Chin Shu continues to be inspired by challenging geotechnical construction work and the motto of Shinei Geotechnique is "Your Buildings on Solid Foundations."
